Interesting proposals in the Government's EU Presidency programme

LO is generally positive towards the EU Presidency programme which has been presented by the Danish Government. The elements concerning training & education and the fight against social dumping, in particular, look promising.

- I am very pleased that the Presidency has brought forward the issue of social dumping which is causing great problems in the EU member states. For far too long now, the citizens of the EU have put up with the single market taking priority over workers' rights, says International Secretary in LO-Denmark, Marie-Louise Knuppert.

However, now, the Commission will be presenting a directive which is to ensure better enforcement of the rules on the posting of workers, among other things. This is something which the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions has called for on a number of occassions.

Training and education

LO is also generally positive towards the Presidency's decision to highlight training and education in the EU member states.

- Training and eduction are at the very top of the list when it comes to ensuring decent jobs for European workers in the future. However, I would like to see increased focus on alternating training which is a combination of theoretical training and training at the workplace. This form of training could be key to helping thousands of young Europeans enter the labour market from which they have otherwise been excluded due to the crisis, says Marie-Louise Knuppert.
